The VanGuard is named after the word “van” combined with “guard,” a direct reference to what it does: it protects a van. The name captures the system’s core function in a single word. VanGuard is the world’s first Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) designed specifically for closed vans, and the name reflects both the vehicle it mounts on and the protection it delivers to workers in active work zones.
Below, we answer the most common questions about the VanGuard impact protection system, from what the name means to who uses it in the field.
What does the name VanGuard mean?
The name VanGuard combines two ideas: “van” and “guard.” It refers directly to a crash cushion that guards a van. The word says it all: this is a protection system built for vans, where the crash cushion acts as the guard that absorbs impact energy and shields the vehicle, its driver, and the workers behind it.
At Verdegro, we name our products to reflect what they do. The same thinking applies to our Armadillo TMA, named after the armadillo, an animal with hard scales that deflect danger. We see that crash cushion the same way: a strong structure capable of absorbing a powerful impact. With VanGuard, the logic is equally direct. A van needs a guard. The VanGuard is that guard.
The name also carries a practical signal for buyers: this system is purpose-built for vans, not adapted from a larger truck-mounted design. That distinction matters when you are specifying equipment for a fleet of closed vans operating in urban or confined work zones where a full-size TMA truck is not practical.
What type of safety system is the VanGuard?
The VanGuard is a Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) designed exclusively for closed vans. It is the world’s first TMA of its kind. The system mounts a crash cushion onto a standard L3H2 closed van and deploys it into an operational position to absorb the energy of an errant vehicle striking the rear of the work zone protection vehicle.
Unlike conventional truck attenuators that require a heavy support vehicle, the VanGuard brings TMA-level protection to a much smaller and more maneuverable platform. It is available in three distinct configurations to suit different operational needs:
- Rear Mounted: The standard VanGuard configuration. The cushion tilts from a transport height of 3,050 mm into a 90-degree operational position, reaching a deployed length of 2,160 mm and a width of 1,830 mm.
- Top Mounted: A new design in our crash cushion range. The cushion slides down from the roof of the van into operational position, with a deployed length of 2,060 mm and a width of 1,980 mm. The rear doors remain fully accessible.
- Swing Mounted: The cushion rotates sideways via a rotation bracket, keeping the rear doors accessible while the system is deployed. The transport height matches the rear-mounted version at 3,050 mm.
On all three versions, the tow hitch remains usable during transport. The VanGuard can be equipped with various arrow boards, Variable Message Signs (VMS), or a combination of both, and the LED display stays visible even when the cushion is folded or mounted on top of the van.
What safety standards does the VanGuard meet?
The VanGuard is engineered to withstand impacts at speeds up to 80 km/h (50 mph), which aligns with the performance demands of active work zone protection. The system is double-patented, with two separate patents covering specific components: the cushion, the tow hitch, and the top mounting mechanism.
The VanGuard is designed to meet the performance requirements relevant to van-mounted attenuator applications in international markets. As a Verdegro product, it is developed within our broader framework of compliance with recognized traffic safety standards, including our work under MASH 2016, the most current crash test standard, which governs our full range of truck mounted attenuators.
The system operates on both 12 V and 24 Vdc electrical systems, making it compatible with a wide range of van models from manufacturers including Renault, Mercedes, Iveco, and Opel. Control is straightforward: you can operate the VanGuard with a remote control or an optional touch panel, keeping deployment fast and reliable on site.
How does the VanGuard protect workers in a work zone?
The VanGuard protects workers by positioning a crash cushion at the rear of a closed van that serves as a shadow vehicle, a moving or stationary barrier between live traffic and the work crew ahead. When an inattentive driver strikes the rear of the protection vehicle, the crash cushion absorbs and dissipates the impact energy, significantly reducing the force transferred to the van, its driver, and the workers in the zone.
Several design features make this protection practical and reliable in real work zone conditions:
- Impact absorption up to 80 km/h: The cushion is engineered to handle high-speed rear-end collisions, which are among the most dangerous events in road work zones.
- Always-on LED display: The LED arrow board or VMS sign remains visible in all positions, transport or operational, so approaching drivers receive continuous warning regardless of the cushion’s deployment state.
- Optional Mobitrack integration: You can fit the VanGuard with Mobitrack, which provides real-time GPS tracking and integrates with safety alert systems including Waze, Google, and Flitsmeister. This means drivers approaching the work zone can receive automatic warnings through their navigation apps, adding a layer of advance warning before they even see the vehicle.
- Rear door and tow hitch access: On the top-mounted and swing-mounted versions, rear doors remain fully usable. The tow hitch is accessible on all versions. This means the van retains its utility as a working vehicle, not just a protection platform.
- Remote or touch-panel operation: You can deploy and retract the cushion quickly and safely without manual physical effort, reducing exposure time for the operator.
The combination of physical impact absorption, active visibility, and connected safety alerts gives work zone crews multiple overlapping layers of protection, which is exactly what high-risk road environments demand.
Who uses the VanGuard impact protection system?
The VanGuard is used by road maintenance crews, highway construction companies, municipal transportation departments, and civil engineering firms that need TMA-level protection without deploying a full-size attenuator truck. It is particularly well suited to teams operating in urban environments, narrow lanes, or locations where a large shadow vehicle is impractical or unavailable.
Government agencies and contractors responsible for traffic management frequently use closed vans as work zone protection vehicles. For these operators, the VanGuard converts a standard fleet van into a certified impact protection vehicle without sacrificing the van’s everyday utility. The tow hitch remains functional, the rear doors stay accessible on two of the three variants, and the system can be color-matched to any RAL specification to meet fleet or authority requirements.
The VanGuard is also a strong fit for incident management teams and road inspection crews who move frequently between locations and need a protection system that deploys and retracts quickly. The remote control operation and compact van platform make it easy to position, deploy, and relocate without the logistical overhead of a dedicated TMA truck.
How Verdegro Helps with Van-Mounted Impact Protection
We developed the VanGuard because we saw a real gap in the market: work zone crews using closed vans had no purpose-built TMA solution. The VanGuard fills that gap with a double-patented, fully engineered system available in three configurations to match your specific operational setup.
Here is what you get when you choose the VanGuard from us:
- Three mounting variants (rear, top, and swing) so you can match the system to your workflow and access needs
- Full customization – any RAL color, choice of arrow boards and/or VMS signs, and 12 V or 24 Vdc compatibility
- Optional Mobitrack integration for real-time GPS tracking, location history, and automatic alerts through major navigation platforms
- Compatibility with a wide range of van brands, including Renault, Mercedes, Iveco, and Opel
- Simple, remote-controlled operation that keeps your team safe during deployment and retraction
